How Physical Neglect Affects At- Risk Youth

As someone who works with at-risk youth, I know first hand how physical neglect can impact their lives. Children who experience physical neglect – whether it's a lack of food, clothing, or medical attention – are at risk of developing serious health problems, including malnutrition, infections, and chronic conditions.

Physical neglect can also affect a child's emotional and social development. Children who don't receive the physical care they need may struggle with self-esteem, have difficulty forming healthy relationships with peers, and may even turn to substance abuse or other negative coping mechanisms.

As adults, these individuals may struggle with mental health issues and have difficulty forming lasting romantic relationships.

It's important that we understand the impact of physical neglect on at-risk youth so we can take steps to prevent it and ensure that every child has access to the care they need to thrive.
